Nashville in Harmony (NiH), Middle Tennessee’s inclusive chorus, is celebrating a remarkable milestone: 20 years of fostering unity through music. Founded in 2004, the nonprofit organization uses the universal language of song as a platform for advocacy, celebration, and connection.
The choir’s mission extends far beyond music. From its inception, NiH aimed to create a safe, welcoming space where people of diverse sexual orientations, gender identities, and backgrounds could come together to sing and share stories. The organization quickly gained recognition for its commitment to promoting inclusivity and equality, becoming an integral part of Nashville’s cultural landscape.
A History of Harmony and Advocacy
What started as a modest gathering of singers has grown into a vibrant ensemble of over 100 members. In its early days, NiH sought to address the lack of LGBTQ+ representation in the local arts community. The choir’s performances became opportunities to spotlight issues affecting marginalized communities while celebrating the rich diversity of human experiences.
Over the years, NiH has performed at countless events, including Pride celebrations, community festivals, and advocacy rallies. The chorus has partnered with local organizations to support causes such as homelessness among LGBTQ+ youth and mental health awareness. These collaborations underscore NiH’s dedication to being more than just a choir; it’s a voice for change and a symbol of hope.
One of the choir’s signature events is its annual holiday concert, which features eclectic programming blending popular music, classical works, and original compositions. These performances often incorporate storytelling, multimedia elements, and guest artists, creating a deeply engaging experience for audiences. By weaving together themes of love, resilience, and community, NiH inspires listeners to reflect on their own roles in building a more inclusive world.
Celebrating 20 Years: A Milestone Concert
To honor two decades of music and advocacy, NiH will take the stage at the historic Ryman Auditorium on December 29, 2024. This 20th Anniversary Celebration will be a retrospective journey through the choir’s rich history. Attendees can expect both holiday classics and favorites from past performances. There are also appearances by special guest artists including American Idol alum Melinda Doolittle, veteran stage performer Megan Murphy Chambers, award-winning singer-songwriter Kira Small, and Nashville-born-and-based artist MORGXN.
The Ryman, often referred to as the “Mother Church of Country Music,” is an iconic venue that perfectly complements the gravity of this occasion. Known for its world-class acoustics and storied legacy, the auditorium will provide a fitting backdrop as NiH reflects on its impact and looks toward the future.
In addition to celebrating its history, the concert will underscore NiH’s ongoing commitment to social justice. Through music, the ensemble hopes to inspire conversations about inclusion and equity, continuing its tradition of advocacy while delighting audiences with heartfelt performances.
This year-end concert wraps up a year of milestones for NiH including their Parthenon debut as part of the ECHO Chamber Music Series on December 8 and several members performing Mozart’s “Mass in C Major K. 317 (Coronation Mass)” and Karl Jenkins’ “Gloria” at Carnegie Hall in April.
The Future of Nashville in Harmony
As NiH celebrates its 20th anniversary, its vision for the future remains as ambitious as ever. The choir plans to expand its outreach programs, collaborate with more community organizations, and develop innovative ways to use music as a tool for education and activism. NiH also aims to strengthen its ties with national and international LGBTQ+ choral networks, further amplifying its voice on a global scale.
NiH is proof of the ability of music to bring people together, break down barriers, and inspire action. With two decades of accomplishments behind it and a promising future ahead, the choir continues to embody its mission of using music to build community and create social change.
