Gender-Fluid Artist Marcilli Releases ‘Done (Breakup Anthem)’ Ahead of Jamaican Independence Day

Introducing Marcilli — a gender-fluid dance pop act out of Jamaica, and one of the first and few openly queer-identified Jamaican artists. Their single 'Done (Breakup Anthem)' is coming out Friday to celebrate Jamaican Independence Day.

Jamaica, Kingston — Jamaica’s vibrant music scene has birthed another rising star, and this one is blazing a trail like no other. Meet Marcilli, a talented vocalist and songwriter who is breaking barriers with their unique fusion of dance music, R&B, and Latin pop. The release of their latest single, ‘Done (Breakup Anthem),’ is making waves not only for its catchy beats but also for the artist’s brave stance as one of the first openly queer-identified Jamaican musicians.

Drawing inspiration from the likes of Billie Eilish, Rihanna, BTS’s Suga, and R&B icon Daniel Caesar, Marcilli is fearlessly paving the way for LGBTQ artists within a cultural heritage that has often been unforgiving to the community. Their boldness and talent have quickly garnered attention, and they are becoming one of the most sought-after acts in Jamaica’s music scene.

In an interview, Marcilli opened up about the origins of ‘Done (Breakup Anthem),’ revealing that the song emerged from a place of heartbreak and disappointment. However, the track’s evolution and transformation into what it is today have brought a sense of encouragement and pride to the artist. They hope their music will inspire others to establish their boundaries and recognize their self-worth.

What sets Marcilli apart is not only their unique sound but also their unyielding determination to challenge societal norms. Coinciding with Jamaican Independence Day, the most significant holiday on the island nation, the artist has strategically released ‘Done (Breakup Anthem)’ to make a powerful statement about independence and personal empowerment. The single ‘Done (Breakup Anthem)’ boasts a collaboration with renowned producer Alexx Antaeus, known for his work with legendary acts such as The Rolling Stones, Earth Wind and Fire, and Julian Marley. Moreover, the track features a Spanish-language vocal contribution from Natalis, a Puerto Rican artist based in New York, who has previously lent their voice to platinum-selling tracks by J Cole, Kanye West, and Popcaan.
