“Tina: The Tina Turner Musical” is a powerhouse production that electrifies the stage with the incomparable energy and resilience of Tina Turner herself. The musical, directed by Phyllida Lloyd and written by Katori Hall with Frank Ketelaar and Kees Prins, chronicles the life and career of the legendary Tina Turner, from her humble beginnings in Nutbush, Tennessee, to her rise to stardom as the Queen of Rock ‘n’ Roll.

From the moment the curtain rises, audiences are transported into Tina’s world, thanks to the dynamic performances and infectious music that permeate every scene. Zurin Villanueva, who portrays Tina Turner, delivers a performance that captures the essence of the iconic singer. Her powerful vocals, dance moves, and magnetic stage presence embody the spirit and strength of Tina, drawing viewers into her journey of triumph over adversity.

The production seamlessly weaves together Turner’s most beloved hits, including “Proud Mary,” “What’s Love Got to Do with It,” and “Simply the Best,” with poignant moments that delve into the personal struggles and triumphs of her life. From her tumultuous relationship with Ike Turner to her courageous decision to break free and forge her own path, the musical explores the highs and lows of Tina’s career with honesty and authenticity.

One of the standout aspects of “Tina” is its stellar cast, who bring depth and dimension to the characters they portray. Deon Releford-Lee shines as Ike Turner, capturing both his charm and his dark side with chilling precision. The chemistry between Villanueva and Releford-Lee crackles with intensity, making their scenes together electric and at times heart-wrenching. I must add that if you can get a whole theater to hate your character where they are booing you at the curtain call, you are a significant actor.

Another standout is Brianna Cameron who played Young Anna-Mae. She can belt out songs like she has been doing this for decades. She projects, enunciates, and brings to life the origin story of Tina Turner.

The production values of “Tina” are also top-notch, with stunning set design by Mark Thompson that transports audiences from smoky nightclubs to glittering concert halls. The choreography by Anthony Van Laast is dynamic and exhilarating, perfectly complementing the energy of Tina’s music.

Beyond the spectacle, “Tina” also offers a message of empowerment and resilience that resonates deeply with audiences. Tina Turner’s story is one of perseverance in the face of adversity, and her journey from hardship to triumph serves as an inspiration to all. Whether you’re a die-hard Tina Turner fan or simply someone who appreciates great music and storytelling, “Tina: The Tina Turner Musical” is a must-see theatrical experience that will leave you dancing in the aisles and cheering for an encore.
