REVIEW – Sparkle, Song, and Heart: ‘Mamma Mia!’ Dazzles Nashville

The touring production of “Mamma Mia!” at the Tennessee Performing Arts Center (TPAC) is an absolute joyride of nostalgia, glitter, and feel-good vibes. It far surpasses the spectacle of the 2008 movie adaptation. If you’re looking for a night filled with catchy tunes, high-energy dance numbers, and a whole lot of heart, this show delivers!

Set on a dreamy Greek island, “Mamma Mia!” is the story of a mother, a daughter, and three potential fathers. On the eve of her wedding, Sophie (Amy Weaver) meets Harry Bright (Rob Marnell), Bill Austin (Jim Newman), and Sam Carmichael (Victor Wallace); all of which received an invitation to the wedding, thinking that their former lover, Donna Sheridan had sent it. Unfortunately, this is an unexpected, and dare I say, horrifying surprise for Donna. Chaos ensues when Donna runs into all three men and then the men discover that they are all possible fathers to Sophie. With ABBA’s greatest hits driving the action, every song feels like an invitation to get up and dance — though maybe wait until the encore to actually do so.

Amy Weaver is a perfect Sophie, balancing youthful excitement with strong vocals, especially in songs like “The Name of the Game.” Christine Sherrill absolutely shines as Donna, bringing both transcendent powerhouse vocals and an emotional depth to her performance. Her rendition of “The Winner Takes It All” is a showstopper — prepare to get chills. And let’s not forget the three charming dads: Sam, Bill, and Harry, who each bring their own quirky charm to the stage. Their chemistry is fantastic, and watching them navigate their unexpected reunion is hysterical.

There are two special things to note about this performance. First, this is not Victor Wallace’s first time playing in “Mamma Mia!” In his youth, he also played Sophie’s fiancé, Sky. Secondly, Amy Weaver graduated from my alma mater, Western Kentucky University and I love seeing a fellow Hilltopper being booked and busy!

Of course, what’s “Mamma Mia!” without a little over-the-top fun? The choreography, especially in numbers like “Lay All Your Love on Me” (flippers and all), is a total blast. The ensemble brings infectious energy, and by the time “Dancing Queen” rolls around, it’s almost impossible not to sing along.

Visually, the show is a treat. The rotating set pieces easily transport us from Donna’s rustic taverna to the picturesque seaside, and the lighting design adds just the right amount of sparkle; although the spotlight operator missed some cues and left actors in the dark. But let’s not forget the music, because really, the biggest star here is ABBA. The live band absolutely nails every note, bringing those classic songs to life with fresh energy.

The audience at TPAC was all in, clapping, singing, and soaking up every moment. Those who left early missed the finale megamix which had everyone on their feet, proving once again why “Mamma Mia!” continues to be a worldwide sensation. If you’re in the mood for a night of laughter, love, and some of the best pop songs ever written, “Mamma Mia!” at TPAC is the perfect escape. It’s fun, it’s fabulous, and it’s impossible to leave without a huge smile on your face!
